Relays & Contactors
A relay is an electrical switching device that enables you to safely use a
timer
to control the on-off operation of HID grow-lights—or any other
equipment that requires a large electrical current. A contactor is a type of heavy-duty relay, capable of switching
a bigger electrical load.
Relays and contactors are often called ‘switching units’, and, like ballasts,
they are also sometimes referred to as grow-light ‘control gear’.
Essential
You must use a relay or contactor if you wish to operate your HID grow-light(s) with a timer!
This is because the switch contacts inside a normal household timer-plug are not capable of handling the high electrical
loads required to ignite HID lamps. Failure to use a relay or contactor when using a timer to operate high-power electrical
equipment will eventually result in the failure of the timer’s switch contacts—a potential electrical hazard.
This problem will occur very quickly when running high wattage HID lighting
equipment, but will take longer to occur with a lower powered HID lamp.
Simple & Safe
All of our relays and contactors are made specifically for horticultural lighting purposes, and many of
these switching units—especially the larger units—have a built-in timer. All units are simple to operate.
Besides plant lighting, a relay or contactor can also be used to safely control the timed on-off operation of other electrical equipment in your grow-room,
such as heaters
or fans.
The relays and contactors we offer are all made in the UK, manufactured to BSI standards and are fully CE compliant.
All units are backed by a full manufacturer’s guarantee.
All units (except where noted) are supplied fully pre-wired and ready for immediate use.
