Lamps (Bulbs)
There are primarily two types of HID
lamp used in modern plant-lighting systems: Metal Halide (MH) lamps and
High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps.
-
Metal Halide lamps produce a brilliant ‘cool’ blue-white light.
Because of this, Metal Halide lamps are ideal for plants in a vegetative growth
state—the dominance of blue light in their spectral distribution encourages
shorter plants, thicker stems and a broader leaf structure.
-
High Pressure Sodium lamps produce a saturating golden-white light.
The predominace of yellow, orange and red in their spectral distribution makes High Pressure Sodium lamps
good for flowering plants (generative growth)—stimulating flower production and stem elongation—but,
their lack of blue light can cause vegetative plants to grow tall and spindly.
All of our HID grow-lamps have a standard E40 base-cap for screw-fitting
into your reflector,
and they are all suitable for ‘burning’ in a horizontally mounted position.
Note that HID lamps cannot be directly connected to the mains electricity supply,
but must be powered by an
HID ballast
(of matching wattage) otherwise damage to equipment will occur.
All of the HID lamps we stock are SON/HPI compatible.
